MONMOUTH-INDEPENDENCE HAS ITS FIRST LOCAL RADIO STATION
The FM radio station KAJC has been on the air since 2005 became a locally owned station in 2010. The radio station was purchased by Calvary Chapel in Monmouth-Independence from Calvary Radio out of Costa Mesa, California. The studio remains at the Calvary Chapel building at 1475 Monmouth Street in Independence where it has been since it went on the air in 2005.
The format has always been focused on Bible teachings, and since July 2010 a good measure of contemporary Christian music has been added. With the local leadership plans are developing to become more of a local information resource including local public service announcements, interviews from local leaders regarding current items of interest, and expanding the local sports broadcasts.
The station is licensed as “non-commercial” so advertisement is prohibited. Underwriting and Sponsorships are permitted which have been popular for broadcasting Central High School football since 2005. Financially, the station will need to gain regular sponsorships for general operation.
KAJC broadcasts on 90.1 FM which has coverage in Independence, Monmouth, Dallas, and Albany with more limited coverage in Corvallis, I-5 south of Salem through Coburg, and as far east as Lebanon. Coverage has to be blocked in the city of Salem to protect the signal of a Salem station.
The radio station is operated primarily by Bob Fraley, the administrator for the church, and Michelle Lewis who gathers programming for the station, manages the program schedule, and produces the live sport broadcasts. The football broadcast team consists of Shawn and Michelle Lewis, Seth Lewis, and Dean Lewis. Shawn & Michelle travel broadcast the basketball games as well. Some changes have already been made to strengthen the signal and automate the operation.
Station information and a programming schedule can be obtained by calling the church at 503-838-0990, the station: 503-837-1000, or can be observed on the web page www.kajcfm.com.
